This Memorial Day, Help Cancer Patients in Your Community

Memorial Day is set aside for remembering our country’s past veterans. These women and men put their lives on the line to defend our country. Chix 4 a Cause appreciates all the sacrifices those veterans made when protecting our rights to freedom and security.

Sadly, cancer patients don’t always have the same feelings of freedom and security as others. Cancer patients may not be able to take part in regular daily activities as they did before their diagnosis. Many patients need help with household chores, cooking, child care, or shopping. They may need help with transportation to and from treatment, getting medical equipment for use at their homes, hiring a home health aide, and filling other needs.

This Memorial Day, help cancer patients in your community by volunteering with or donating to our Gifts of Love program. If you prefer, you can even designate your donation in honor or memory of a loved one.

Gifts of Love are unique to each cancer patient’s needs and help improve their emotional well-being. Typical Gifts include mortgage or rent assistance, gas or grocery cards, a family weekend away, theater or concert tickets, or taxi or bus passes. Gifts of Love can go a long way toward improving a patient’s quality of life at a time when help is needed not only due to mounting medical bills, but also as they struggle with the realities of a cancer diagnosis.

You must know a war veteran in one way or another. Whether they fought a war against another country or against cancer itself, donate in that person’s name at http://www.chix4acause.org today.

What Gives You Hope?

“Once you choose hope, anything’s possible.” Christopher Reeve

“Some days there won’t be a song in your heart. Sing anyway.” Emory Austin

“The human spirit is stronger than anything that can happen to it.” C.C. Scott

Hope is something all cancer patients struggle with. They often react with shock, disbelief, fear, anxiety, guilt, sadness, grief, and other negative emotions. Family and friends may feel scared, uncertain, angry, numb, or confused about a loved one’s diagnosis.

A cancer patient’s support group will most likely offer practical help with household chores, cooking, child care, or shopping, and keep in touch through visits, phone calls, and emails. Eventually a cancer patient will also need transportation to and from appointments, prescriptions refilled, and constant attention to ensure his needs are met. Surgery, chemotherapy, and other treatments can cause side effects such as weight loss or gain, hair loss, skin damage, fatigue, and other changes that affect a cancer patient’s appearance and opinion of himself.

As a result of excessive dependence on others, negative thoughts and feelings typically cause a cancer patient’s physical, mental, and emotional detachment from others. Suppressed emotions often become toxic to his mental and physical self, worsening his potential for health restoration.

With the stresses of cancer, it’s important a patient take care of his entire self, not just the cancer. The person’s feelings need care just as his body does. Because of the uncertainties and loss of control that follow a cancer diagnosis, a patient needs constant emotional support and reassurance over his course of treatment and potential recovery. It’s believed that patients who constantly feel loved and valued and receive empathy, reassurance, and encouragement consistently adjust more successfully over time.

One way you can show cancer patients emotional support is through volunteering with Chix 4 a Cause or donating to our Gifts of Love program.

Gifts of Love Boxes Available Soon

If you or someone you love has fought cancer, you know that emotional distress is common. Uncertainties about the future and loss of control result in feelings of fear, anxiety, loneliness, despair and helplessness. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, prescription drugs and other medical treatments cause unpleasant side effects such as nausea, vomiting, hair loss and tiredness.

Because of all these uncontrollable physical and emotional changes, cancer patients and/or family and friends often have difficulty discussing their feelings. Support circles may be geographically distant and unable to physically be with their loved ones during their battle. People often don’t know what to do to help a loved one fighting cancer because they’ve never fought the disease themselves.

A perfect way to show emotional support for cancer patients is through gifts unique to that individual’s needs. Magazines, CDs, books and gift cards are especially cherished by cancer patients. This is why Chix 4 a Cause is providing Gifts of Love Boxes.

Each standard Gifts of Love Box contains a Chix band and can coozie; prayer shawl; Divine Angel prayer card; Gifts of Love Essential Oil .5 mL roller in Hope (citrus) or Grace (lavender); two CDs with inspirational songs; guided meditation CD with handout; inspirational necklace with the word Grace, Hope, or Love; votive candle holder with inspirational word Grace, Gratitude, Hope, or Love; votive candle depending on cancer type: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, or red; cancer resource guide; and Cure magazine. Breast cancer patients also receive the book The Blue Tattoo Club: A Breast Cancer Sisterhood by Christy L. Schwan.

Each customized Gifts of Love Box includes the same items as the standard Box and may include one or more items at an additional cost: Chix-branded insulated grocery bag or key chain; essential oil diffuser with essential oil in Hope (citrus) or Grace (lavender); essential oil .5 mL bottle in Hope or Grace; and essential oil .5 mL roller in Hope or Grace.
