We Need Your Help! We Are Still Looking for a 3-Wheeled Bike and Theater Tickets

We appreciate how generous you are in giving your time and monetary donations to help cancer patients in your community. Now we need your help securing a three-wheeled bike and professional-theater tickets for two local cancer patients as part of our Gifts of Love program.

Gifts of Love are unique to each cancer patient’s needs and help improve their emotional well-being. Typical Gifts include mortgage or rent assistance, gas or grocery cards, a family weekend away, theater or concert tickets, or taxi or bus passes. Gifts of Love can go a long way toward improving a patient’s quality of life at a time when help is needed not only due to mounting medical bills, but also as they struggle with the realities of a cancer diagnosis.

The three-wheeled bike is requested for an adult female who loves riding but needs more stability to keep her balance. The professional-theater tickets are for a woman who enjoys plays and musicals performed at the Schauer Arts Center in Hartford, WI; Riverside Theater in Milwaukee; Milwaukee Repertory Theater; Skylight Music Theatre in Milwaukee; Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in Milwaukee; or The Fireside Theatre in Fort Atkinson, WI.

Any assistance with securing these items for a small fee to the owner or as a donation to CHIX 4 a Cause is greatly appreciated.

Leads, questions, and donations may be directed through our website at http://www.chix4acause.org. As always, we thank you for your generous support of cancer patients in your community.

Reduce Your Risk of Getting Cancer

As much as CHIX 4 a Cause enjoys helping cancer patients in the community, we don’t want your name coming up on our list of people in need. Here are six ways you can reduce your risk of getting cancer.

• Eat Healthy Foods
Eating at least 2 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables daily; a variety of whole grain pastas, breads, and cereals; brown rice rather than white rice; and fish or poultry lowers your risk of developing cancer. Reducing or eliminating your consumption of red meat, sweets, and processed foods also decreases your risk of getting cancer.

• Exercise Regularly
Staying physically active reduces your risk of breast, colon, and endometrial/prostate cancer. Adults should engage in moderately-intense activity such as briskly walking for 150 minutes weekly, or vigorous activity such as jogging for 75 minutes weekly. Kids should engage in an hour of moderate or vigorous activity daily and vigorous activity three or more days weekly.

• Maintain a Healthy Weight
Obesity increases your risk of breast, colon, kidney, esophageal, pancreatic, and endometrial cancer. Therefore, maintaining healthy eating and exercise habits helps you maintain a healthy weight and reduces your risk of cancer.

• Limit Consumption of Alcohol
Consuming alcohol increases your risk for breast, mouth, throat, voice box, esophageal, liver, colon, and rectal cancer. Men should have no more than two drinks daily, women no more than one drink daily. One drink is 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1 1/2 ounces of 80-proof liquor.

• Avoid Tobacco
Over three-fourths of deaths due to lung cancer and a large number of deaths related to cancer in general result from using tobacco. Never use tobacco in any form. If you are using tobacco, visit cancer.org/quitsmoking or call the American Cancer Society at 1-800- 227-2345 for help quitting.

• Get Screened for Cancer Regularly
Cancer is more easily treated when it’s caught early. If the disease covers a small area and has not spread, in most cases it’s more easily treated, and you’re more likely to survive. Speak with your physician about getting screened for breast, colon, lung, and cervical/prostate cancer on a regular basis.

If you’re not already implementing these strategies in your daily life, we strongly urge you to start doing so today. To learn more about supporting cancer patients in your community, visit www.chix4acause.org.
