Thanks to JoAnn Roller, the Kettle Moraine All-Terrain Vehicle Association (KMATVA), and everyone who participated in our 9 th Annual Cancer Ride on October 8, 2016, over $23,200 was raised for CHIX 4 a Cause!
The Annual Cancer Ride began in 2007 through the generosity of JoAnn Roller, one of KMATVA’s board of directors. JoAnn, whose family members are avid ATV riders, wanted to use her passion to make a difference in her community. She knew October is the month in which people heavily promote cancer awareness. Through an online search, she discovered CHIX 4 a Cause. JoAnn liked the fact that we’re a small, local organization helping cancer patients in the Greater Milwaukee area and beyond. She quickly reached out to Jillian Clark, founder/CEO of CHIX 4 a Cause.
Upon meeting for lemonade, JoAnn and Jillian quickly came up with the idea for an Annual
Cancer Ride benefitting CHIX 4 a Cause. Because Washington County, WI, has only winter ATV trails, JoAnn got in touch with Carol Lepkowski, co-owner of Mountain Springs Motel and Campground in Suring, WI, and asked if the campground would accommodate riders one October weekend annually. The Dusty Trails ATV Trail System, which covers over 500 miles of marked trails and forest roads, is accessible from Mountain Springs. Carol was delighted to help out, so JoAnn and she worked out the details.
Upon talking about her plans to fill the motel with ATV riders for the Annual Cancer Ride, people said JoAnn was crazy. Why would so many riders from Washington County, WI, where KMATVA is located, travel hours north to Oconto County, WI? How did JoAnn intend to cover the costs for food, supplies, and other necessities? What was she thinking planning such a huge event with no guaranteed success?
Thankfully, JoAnn ignored the naysayers and proceeded with what her inner voice was instructing her to do. She reached out to various groups of people and businesses for assistance with finances and supplies for the Annual Cancer Ride. The people and businesses happily provided what she needed, and introduced her to many more supporters along the way. Through everyone’s hard work, JoAnn consistently receives everything she needs to host the Annual Cancer Ride. In addition, the amount of money raised each year is often double the amount raised the previous year.
JoAnn stated that the camaraderie she feels with the increasing number of riders each year is unbelievable. Whether the weather is sunny, rainy, or cold, loyal riders and their family and friends show up for the Annual Cancer Ride. JoAnn’s impressed with the riders’ loyalty and the fact that once they come, they continue coming and bringing more riders each year.
The Annual Cancer Ride includes more than just a fun-filled day of riding ATVs with family and friends. Participants also enjoy food & beverages, games, silent auctions, raffles, and more.
There are even prizes for the participant bringing in the largest amount of pledges before the big event.
